For my interview, I decided to interview my step-mom Kathy. Kathy has been a part of my life for about 7 years, but I don't know much about her growing up. I know she really likes disney and likes musicals, and she used to play piano for a bit, but past that I'm pretty out of the know.
Me: What is your earliest memory related to music ?
Kathy: Probably a roadtrip with my dad listening to The Little Mermaid, the whole tape, 8 hours there and back, I was probably around 7 or 8.
Me: Did you ever play an instrument ?
Kathy: Yes I played piano.... And i played my voice !
Me: When did you start playing piano ?
Kathy: I was 13.
Me: Why did you start playing piano?
Kathy: Because my parents said each of us (her and her siblings) had to pick an instrument, I picked piano.
Me: Did you play as part of any ensembles, piano or voice ?
Kathy: I did not play piano with any ensemble, I would have to play in church sometimes though. And singing, I was in the chorus, but not like a quartet or anything.
Me: Was it the highschool chorus ?
Kathy: Middle school and High school.
Me: Has music affected your life in any big ways ?
Kathy: It was always a way for me and my dad to bond, we would sing together all the time, otherwise, not really, just the normal way people would listen to music. It's always a fallback, for emotional responses, you can always fall back on music, it's always there for you, it can calm you or excite you or even make you more sad if thats what you want. It's there for all your emotions.
Me: What was your favorite music as a kid ?
Kathy: Golden Oldies, cause that's what my dad listened to.
Me: How did your music taste change when you became a teenager.
Kathy: It became more angsty as I became more angsty. I began to like the more popular alternative rock.
Me: And as an adult ?
Kathy: As an adult my music taste became much more ecclectic, i was open to more types of music; country, classical, opera, rock, disney. I never really liked Death Metal though.
Me: Have you gone to many concerts ?
Kathy: I feel like i've gone to my fair share of concerts, some people might think it's many but I don't consider it to be a lot.
Me: What was your favorite concert ?
Kathy: Favorite? ooh. The Summer Sanitarium tour in the early 2000's. It consisted of KORN, Kid Rock, and Metallica was the headliner.
Me: Why was it your favorite ?
Kathy: Because I went with my brother Matt, and unfortunately some random guy that i wasnt even dating invited himself along. But Matt and i had a good time. Metallica started playing that evening and a thunderstorm started. It was kinda magical because they kept playing through the storm, even with all the lightning and everything. Me and Matt also got to bond over the fact that there was someone we didn't really want there. He was awkward.
Me: What was your least favorite concert ?
Kathy: Eugh that's hard. I don't know i've enjoyed all the concerts I've been to. If I had to pick one i'd say the DC Talk concert at Carowinds when I was 17, but only because i got my first migraine that day and had to leave. I think there's something to enjoy and take out of every concert though.
Me: Favorite and least favorite genres ?
Kathy: Least favorite would be the genre of Death metal, I like heavy metal but not death metal. Show tunes are probably my favorite.
Me: Favorite musical ?
Kathy: Phantom of the Opera.
Me: Favorite musical you've seen in person ?
Kathy: Phantom of the Opera
Me: What's the farthest you've ever traveled for music ?
Kathy: I think 4 hours.
Me: What was that for ?
Kathy: For a Better Than Ezra concert in Myrtle Beach.
Me: Would your older self like your younger self's taste in music ?
Kathy: Yes, definitely.
Me: What's the first album you bought ?
Kathy: Alanis Morisette, Jagged Little Pill
Me: What is your and my dad's favorite music to listen to together ?
Kathy: Blue October
Me: Any specific songs ?
Kathy: Nope ! We also like listening to anything you can dance to together.
Me: What kind of music do you use to cope ?
Kathy: With what emotion? It depends on what im feeling, if i'm really upset or stressed and trying to calm down, I listen to the Pride and Prejudice soundtrack, otherwise probably disney music.
Me: Dream musical to go see ?
Kathy: It's gonna sound stupid but I would love to see Phantom of the Opera again. I've seen all the ones that i've dreamt of seeing, all the other ones are just a bonus. Maybe it hasn't even been written yet.
Me: Go to music for right now ?
Kathy: Chappell Roan
Me: Why ?
Kathy: Because her music is fun and peppy and it just naturally lifts your spirits. Its fun to sing to and dance to and exercise to.
Me: Do you support my career in music ?
Kathy: I do ! I am very excited for your career in music, to see where you go. I actually think about it a lot.
Me: Do you regret ending your musical journey ?
Kathy: Sometimes. But it never really ended though did it. My piano journey ended, but i still don't feel like it's ever to late to pick it back up, just need an actual piano. I loved playing piano.
Heyy Chase! While reading your blog it liked clicked the when I first had an interaction with music was because of The Little Mermaid. I'm glad that she supports your career in music. I also find it funny/cool that she enjoys Chappell Roan, most older people would find her music annoying.
ReplyDeleteYour step-mom seems really cool, and she has awesome music taste! I hope she is able to get a piano so that she can start playing again! Also, seeing Phantom of the Opera in person sounds very awesome, I'm glad she was able to experience that
